IIRC, doesn't the "best age" thing come up with Marius at some point? I have a vague memory of him talking about this, maybe in The Vampire Armand or Blood and Gold? About how he was 40 when he was turned and how, because that was relatively old for a Roman, he felt like he'd experienced enough of life that he didn't feel that he was missing out on anything. So yeah, I'd say 40s, maybe even 50s. Enough to have lived a rich life and have gained some knowledge and experience of the world first.
Although talking about it now is so weird because like you, Xans, as a teenager I would've become a vampire without hesitation! I don't think I really understood what the "killing" part would mean. Mostly I just wanted unlimited access to money and travel and art and all those fabulous things Anne Rice's vampires were always getting up to. All that stuff's still awesome, but I'm a little more squeamish about the idea of killing people now that I'm a grown ass woman. XD
